There are various builds to choose from in Town Star, but in most cases, the most basic production activity is farming. You can grow crops and sell them directly, or process them to run a ranch or process them into other items to use as materials for higher-tier tech trees.
So, now that I know farming is the basis, I installed wheat fields and minimized the movement by placing farm worker's houses, silos, and windmills nearby. Since it's a village located near the sea, I thought it would be good to produce salt together, so I placed wheat fields all over the coast. But as time goes by, the wheat fields and workers increase, but the profit doesn't increase. Why is that?
This is because there are various factors that affect crop growth. The main factors in Town Star are largely three: shade/seawater/pollution. If you don't understand this system, the time required for crop growth increases exponentially, reducing operational efficiency.
Shade, seawater, and pollution have different causes, but the effects themselves are the same. Regardless of the type, each time one of these obstacles overlaps around a crop, the time required for the crop to grow doubles.
For example, let's say there is an oil refinery around the location where the crop is planted. The oil refinery generates pollution of 4 based on the nearest tile, and the pollution level decreases by 1 each time the tile moves away by one space. The range of influence is up to 3 tiles, and the power plant provides pollution of 4-3-2-1 as it moves further away. In addition, the same range also casts a shadow of 4-3-2-1.
In other words, even if only one oil refinery is built on an empty land, the nearest tile has an obstacle factor of 8, and even if it is 4 spaces away, an obstacle factor of 2 is overlapped. Therefore, the growth time of all crops increases to the maximum within a 3-tile radius around the oil refinery, and even if it is 4 spaces away, it takes 4 times the growth time compared to the fastest time.
So, what should I do for more efficient farming? The answer is simple. Select the area where you want to grow crops first, and exclude tall buildings or industrial facilities around that location.
If you started a village near a river, concentrate the farms in the area close to the river and send industrial facilities or worker accommodations to the opposite side. If the terrain is adjacent to the sea instead of a river, concentrate the farms on the opposite side of the coast and secure salt by placing windmills and salt farms that are not affected by shadows/wind/pollution around the river.
The 16x16 tiles available in Town Star may not be insufficient one by one, but considering the factors that affect the surrounding area, the space to build buildings is tighter than you think. That's why prior urban planning is important.
