· This game offers a unique experience combining two viral genres: a quirky simulation and low-fi horror.

2. 🏪 Story Mode: Convenience Store Operations and Stealth Investigation
· In the story mode, consisting of 13 night shifts, players must operate the convenience store while investigating suspicious customers to see if they are malicious doppelgangers.
· Players must identify suspects using visual clues and the in-game ID scanner system, and can confront suspicious customers with a gun behind the counter. This process features exaggerated and gory violence.
· Players must also complete tasks for a demanding boss, alongside various simulation elements like stocking shelves, cleaning, managing finances, building defenses, and maintaining store aesthetics.
· These elements combine to form a low-stress yet addictive loop, demonstrating why many simulation games succeed despite low budgets or incomplete polish.
· While there's a desire for more depth in the investigation process, it's understandable that simplicity is maintained given the high chance of error each night shift.
· I worried the simulation elements might overshadow the investigation, but the game surprises by streamlining or optimizing these elements to avoid feeling unnecessarily complex or tedious.

3. 👾 Night Combat: Battling Horrifying Entities
· From the second or third night shift onwards, mistakes are inevitable, leading to missed doppelgangers, which signifies a night with 'The Entity.' This entity is a spider-like, multi-limbed horror monster that tries to kill the player.
· Initially, it has a sufficiently creepy design that is threatening but doesn't inflict much damage.
· As consecutive failures mount, the monster becomes stronger and brings friends with different weaknesses and strengths.
· The night sequences can offer a somewhat chaotic gameplay experience due to collision detection issues and a stealth system that is too narrow to be effective. However, the relatively forgiving damage and the monsters' semi-chaotic, low-fi nature make these sequences surprisingly fun. It's even more enjoyable with upgraded weapons and a systematic plan for each monster type.
· The late-game run-and-gun combat can deviate from plans, but burning creepy dolls with a flamethrower was definitely fun. Like many aspects of 'Shift at Midnight,' the low-fi charm and good pacing of each gameplay segment mask the flaws well, especially within the relatively short 10-hour story playtime.

4. 👻 Horror Elements: Creating a Fun and Bizarre Atmosphere
· Rather than a serious horror game, it feels more like walking through a haunted house than experiencing deep dread or fear found in other games.
· This isn't necessarily bad. The sudden jump scares that appear at the end of the night are so well-executed that they elicit laughter, showing the developers succeeded in catching players off guard after lulling them into a false sense of security.
· The early 3D-style character models offer many bizarre and strange moments for those who found the Oddjob character model in 'GoldenEye' amusing.
· The grotesqueness of the character models provides a lot of fun amidst the semi-realistic attempts that emerge over time, and I want to avoid spoilers. It also brings to mind past low-budget horror productions like 'Doctor Who,' with many scenes making the character models even more bizarre and strange.
· The characters' annoyed dialogue during interrogations, questioning their humanity, is quite amusing and a good way to disrupt momentary deductions, but the repetition of lines is more frequent than expected.
· A more problematic issue is that the visual cues for certain characters aren't rendered clearly enough for accurate deductions. This is rare but can be an issue for hardcore players aiming for perfect night shifts.

5. 📚 Story and Replay Value: Hidden Stories and Repeat Play Enjoyment
· 'Shift at Midnight' offers more structure and story than expected, though never at a deep level. It hints at a vague lore and suggests something is happening beyond the convenience store.
· It leans more towards creepypasta-esque weirdness than deep lore, but it works better than expected.
· Thanks to random elements in events and night shifts, excluding multiple endings and a few key events, it offers enough replay value for players who enjoy its unique atmosphere and want more.
· My playthrough concluded with a sequence too ambitious for the engine and mechanics to handle properly, leading to frustration with the gameplay at the last moment, but the attempt to end with a bang was appreciated.
· I've discussed the story more than anticipated because it's currently the game's complete portion. There's post-game content with additional night shifts to complete, but the endless mode is marked as beta and will feature more procedural events and content upon its full release later this year.
· It was surprising considering the game was primarily promoted as a multiplayer title. However, it was enjoyable enough solo, and the proximity chat support and stealth elements for friends well prepare it for future multiplayer experiences.
· The story mode is about 10 hours long and structured more for solo players than groups, and the deduction aspect can feel somewhat lacking when playing with friends due to the absence of PvP without tricks or deduction.
· Nevertheless, with fun character models to unlock, quirky physics, and jump scares, it's a title with significant potential for enjoyment with friends in the future, especially considering its Game Pass release and affordable price. However, be prepared that the multiplayer experience might be limited sooner than expected in its current state.

6. 👍 Overall Review: Low-Budget Charm and Potential
· 'Shift at Midnight' surprised me with its genre blend and low-fi horror, making the rough edges of its low budget easily forgivable. It was an enjoyable experience that pulled me into a routine that, despite its flaws becoming apparent within the first hour, kept me hooked.
· While it may fall slightly short of its multiplayer promise, it offers plenty of potential and hours of spooky fun for solo players. It also provides ample enjoyment for fans of less intense horror.
