Smilegate CVO Kwon Hyuk-bin: "Indie games will rule the world"
Smilegate held the indie game festival 'Burning Beaver 2023' on the 1st (Fri) at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Burning Beaver will run until December 3rd (Sun).
Burning Beaver is a cultural event enjoyed by creators, workers, and the public who love indie games. Users can enjoy 90 games filled with creators' passion, challenge, and experimental spirit both online and offline. Last year, Burning Beaver achieved 8,000 on-site visitors and 300,000 online visitors.
Kwon Hyuk-bin, Smilegate CVO (Chief Vision Officer), attended the eve festival on November 30th to cheer on the developers. Kwon CVO said, "I won't say much, don't think that indie games won't be popular," and introduced the background of Burning Beaver's full support, saying, "I think indie games will lead, pioneer, and dominate the world in the future." Then, Keum Kang-sun, acting director of Lost Ark, jokingly said, "If you're doing indie games and it doesn't work out, come to my team."
This year's event was held at the DDP in the heart of downtown Seoul, increasing accessibility and convenience for visitors. Visitors can experience a variety of indie game-related attractions, including 90 indie game experience booths, influencer stage events, special exhibitions, and a goods store.
One participant said, "It's definitely wider and more pleasant than last year," and added, "Thank you for preparing Wi-Fi and LAN cables for creators, and even supporting accommodation." He continued, "I think it's the best in Korea among indie game support events," and added, "I feel Kwon CVO's will again."
Burning Beaver is operated by Future Lab within Smilegate. Smilegate has been supporting creators through Future Lab since 2010. More than 2,500 developers have continued development at Future Lab. The amount donated by Smilegate, creators, and gamers together is more than 3 billion won.
Smilegate introduced the worldview of 'Adventure to Beaver World' to the exhibition so that the festival itself can be enjoyed as a game. Visitors can immerse themselves in the exhibition through various events such as performing adventures to achieve quests on-site and acquiring exclusive currency to exchange for goods items.
A special exhibition 'ver 0.0.1' has been prepared for Burning Beaver. You can check the creative process of the game developing from the early stages of indie game development to the completion stage. You can experience the early prototypes of 10 games among this year's participating team exhibitions and watch the creator's explanation of the development process.
The 'Burning Beaver of the Year' awards ceremony will be held at Beaver Square at 5 PM on December 3rd (Sun). It is characterized by participating teams demonstrating each other's games and directly selecting and celebrating excellent games. A Smilegate official explained, "It was prepared to create a culture of mutual support and support among creators, not competition."
Various stage events such as game demonstrations, autograph sessions, and talk shows with influencers are also held every day at 1 PM during the event. On the 1st, 'Game Review Restaurant with Kim Na-sung' will be held, and on the 2nd, 'Real-time Indie Game Battle with Yeokka' and 'Game Review Restaurant with Kane' events will be held. On the last day, the 3rd, Nam Do-hyung's voice actor talk show will be held.
