Before collecting Pal Souls, check if you have already enhanced Pals that you don't use. You can pay to reset the enhancement stage and get the used Souls back.
Surprisingly, the most lacking is the Small Pal Soul. Small Pal Souls are obtained by wandering around low-level areas, opening chests, or picking them up from the ground, so unless you intentionally collect them, you'll rarely get them. Even if you try chest hunting with Jetragon in the late game, it's not easy to find them because there are many trees in the early areas, and even then, you often get items like arrows or bread.
The recommended method is to hunt or mass butcher Pals that give Small Pal Souls. Various Pals such as Daedream, Maraith, Nox, and Masquerade drop the item, but Lunaris is known as the standard choice among them. Lunaris is not common even in its habitat, so butchering is easier than hunting. The drop rate is noticeably higher compared to other Pals, and you can expect to get about 3-4 Small Pal Souls per 10 Pals. If exploring is convenient for you, explore; if mass breeding and butchering are convenient, do that.
The best way to collect Medium Pal Souls is in the desert area. Unlike the early areas, it consists of flatlands, making it easy to find chests, and there are many of them, so you can quickly accumulate Medium Pal Souls by riding Jetragon around.
It's best to get Large Pal Souls in the snow mountain area. Thanks to the snow, chests are more visible, and there are areas where chests are openly gathered near the city. They are also collected while running snow mountain dungeons to collect Technology Points.
Anubis and Katress drop Large Pal Souls, so it is also recommended to periodically catch Alpha Pals. If hunting is annoying, you can breed and butcher leftover Anubis and Katress, just like Lunaris. Note that Katress can only be obtained by breeding Katress with Katress.
