What was the reason Kim Hyung Tae revealed for the creation of 'Stellar Blade'?

A video revealing the origin story of Shift Up's open-world action-adventure 'Stellar Blade,' which has been a hot topic even before its release, was released on the official PlayStation YouTube channel in the early hours of today (13th).

The video, titled 'Stellar Blade - The Journey (Behind the Scenes),' features CEO Kim Hyung-tae and many other developers, who share the origins of 'Stellar Blade,' the protagonist Eve and her companions, the design of the Native enemies, and other behind-the-scenes stories.

The video begins by exploring the origins of 'Stellar Blade.' How was 'Stellar Blade,' which tells the story of Eve, a warrior who reclaims Earth from the mysterious monster Native, born? Interestingly, CEO Kim Hyung-tae revealed that a taxi driver strike was the catalyst. 'In the future, artificial intelligence will replace the job of taxi drivers. What would happen to me if this happened?' Everything started from that question. The curiosity about what it means for humans to be completely replaced was the beginning of 'Stellar Blade.'

Kim Hyung-tae decided to develop 'Stellar Blade,' but the reaction from those around him was lukewarm. At the time, mobile games dominated the Korean market, and the console market barely existed. This was not just an external reaction. There were also great concerns internally. Above all, there were very few developers with experience developing AAA console games. However, Kim Hyung-tae was firm. He said, "I felt a sense of mission that I had to do it now because if I didn't do it now, I wouldn't be able to," and started developing 'Stellar Blade' despite the concerns.

The behind-the-scenes story of the Native design, the mysterious monsters that occupy Earth, was also revealed in the video. How was the Native, which is different from existing monsters in many ways, born? The Native was designed as a monster that cannot be fully expressed by the sentence 'existing monster.' They wanted to give a different feel from existing monsters. The monster that CEO Kim Hyung-tae cited as an example was the monster that appeared in Bong Joon-ho's movie 'The Host'. Kim Hyung-tae, who wanted to incorporate that bizarreness into the Native of 'Stellar Blade,' contacted Jang Hee-cheol, the monster designer who designed the monster, and his joining strengthened the Native design.

Concept Art Lead Lee Chang-min said that his joining was an important turning point. Not only did his skills as an artist improve, but it also became an opportunity to make the Native more realistic. Usually, monsters that appear in games are implemented in 3D through an engine, but 'Stellar Blade' was different. They started by creating a model of the Native first. This was of great help in expressing mass, the presence of the character, and the overall proportions. Regarding this, Concept Art Lead Lee Chang-min explained, "We were able to create a type of creature that was definitely unique and in some ways even bizarre."

'What is human?' 'Stellar Blade,' which started with one question, will present what kind of answer to users? Just as artificial intelligence replaced taxi drivers, can something replace the place of humans? Let's find out through 'Stellar Blade,' which will be officially released on April 26th.
