'Super Vibe', slightly changing a familiar taste is the scariest.

Theorycraft Games, founded by key developers from Riot Games, Bungie, and Blizzard, and Nexon's new title for the domestic market, 'Supervive', will be demoed at the Nexon booth at G-STAR 2024 ahead of its OBT launch on the 21st.

 

 

'Supervive', which has been gradually revealed in Korea since June of this year, is a MOBA battle royale game where players fight until the last team survives in a changing battlefield. Users select hunters with different abilities, earn experience and funds by defeating monsters, and engage in fierce battles for survival in an increasingly narrow battlefield as they acquire items.

This G-STAR demo was conducted in duos, with a total of 20 teams competing to be the last survivors. As the MOBA and battle royale genres have been popular for a long time, the first impression of 'Supervive' was very familiar. To explain further, it uses a top-down shooter style with mouse cursor aiming and firing, and also incorporates elements from other genres such as traversing cliffs and walls, and gliding. However, these attempts are similar to those found in many battle royale games, so users who enjoy the battle royale genre will not find it unfamiliar.

 

As it brings a familiar and popular taste, 'Supervive' is very easy to approach if you have played online games before. However, that alone is not enough to keep you playing. The key is how well it incorporates its own unique characteristics into the familiar formula, or how well it refines the details to realize the gameplay you expect.

 

First of all, the demo version of 'Supervive' features a total of 14 characters in 5 roles. There are 5 roles: Fighter, the core damage dealer in combat; Initiator, specialized in starting fights; Frontliner, who endures while fighting at the forefront; Protector, specialized in protecting or healing allies; and Controller, who can protect allies and make plays with high utility and CC.

When you start the game, one of your teammates is designated as the jump leader, and you start the game in earnest after selecting a character in order from the leader. This part will be easier to understand if you have played EA's battle royale shooter 'Apex Legends'. As with any battle royale genre, the path of the transport ship passing over the map changes each time, and the drop point can only be selected within that path. The drop pod falls so fast that it is difficult to get far away from the drop point, and there are quite a few abyss sections where you can fall to your death, so there are relatively few areas to farm safely, which is a characteristic of 'Supervive' that often leads to early engagements.

 

The battle itself is a mix of top-down shooter and MOBA, utilizing skills with mouse clicks, Shift, Q, and R keys, character passives, team composition, and even terrain. In particular, terrain was a very important point, no less than skills. Most skills with knockback cause immediate stun when they hit a wall, and if you fall into the abyss, you will die unless you quickly deploy your glider to avoid additional hits.

As engagements are frequent and there is a high chance of being in a big crisis at once, the TTK (time to kill) of Supervive itself is quite short. There are many so-called ABCD brawls, so it is easy to get killed by a single mistake. Considering these characteristics, Supervive has prepared several ways to revive teammates. First of all, the dead user becomes a 'Wisp', and the Wisp can be revived if a teammate touches it. Or, even in a completely dead state, you can go to the item box left in that place and revive them. If that doesn't work, you can go to the revival beacons scattered around the map and revive.

 

So, quite a few big engagements often unfold and kills are made, but it was surprisingly difficult for one team to be completely wiped out from the beginning. Of course, gliding is unfamiliar at first, and if you are attacked by an enemy while gliding, you will be immediately stunned or fall to your death, so you will often suffer before you get used to it. However, revival is relatively easy, so there was room to survive and counterattack somehow. There are also characters who can check or immediately deploy Wisps into battle, such as 'Eluna', who can immediately revive allies in the Wisp stage, or 'Kingpin', who can even pull Wisps, so the engagement was quite fierce even in the early to mid game.

Not only combat but also farming is important, and strategically checking and securing vaults and base camps in addition to monster areas and beacons was also a point of 'Supervive'. Vaults take some time to open, but have a high probability of obtaining good equipment. In particular, the special skills 'Power' assigned to the F and G keys provided another variable in combat. Base camps provide not only peripheral vision and health recovery, but also crafting benches for making recovery potions and enhancing equipment, making them a good base for reorganizing the front lines.

As the demo time was not very long, it was not easy to uncover everything about 'Supervive' at once. Of course, the basic gameplay is mostly a good combination of well-known things in the Supervive style. However, as I played, I gradually felt the charm of 'Supervive' and wanted to delve deeper.

 

Originally, my main characters in MOBA games are initiators, so I mainly played Bishop, an initiator, in this demo. Of course, just because he's an 'Initiator' doesn't mean he only has the type of skills I knew, but at least the fun of firmly grabbing an opponent and pushing them against a wall for a confirmed kill timing was great. It's a feeling I get when I play other MOBAs, but 'Supervive' was showing its own charm by interpreting that taste in a different way. Gliding away, or ambushing enemies who are running away like that without much effort, and so on. And because revival is easy and the tempo is fast, I was able to enjoy the fun of combat richly during that short time. I wanted to feel that unique taste with other characters as well, so I think it's worth looking forward to not only the G-STAR demo but also the OBT on the 21st.
