Roblox Announces Plans to Expand Creator Monetization at GDC

Immersive gaming and creation platform Roblox announced the release of a generative AI foundation model and new creator tools at GDC (Game Developers Conference) 2025 held in San Francisco, USA on the 17th (local time).

Roblox announced the open-sourcing of 'Cube', a foundation model for generative AI-based 3D content creation, and also announced that it will first introduce a function that supports the creation of 3D objects called 'mesh'.

Cube is a model composed of approximately 1.9 billion parameters, and directly learns 3.5 million 3D meshes based on 23 transformer layers. According to Roblox, the Cube model will be the basis for various AI tools to be developed in the future, including tools that support the creation of very complex scenes, and will ultimately evolve into a multimodal model that learns various input data such as text, images, and videos, integrating with existing AI-based generation tools.

Simplifying Roblox Studio for Creators

A simplification announcement was also made for Roblox Studio, an ecosystem and engine that supports creators in creating 3D immersive content. By upgrading the UI, introducing the ability to customize the toolbar, and greatly improving performance and stability, users can more easily use Roblox Studio.

In addition, by upgrading Roblox Studio's Asset Manager, it plans to further enhance performance and stability along with enhanced integrated asset management, search, and filtering functions. In addition, by newly introducing comment and annotation functions, it also supports quick and efficient communication between developers.

Official Launch Plan for Friend Referral Program

Meanwhile, Roblox will officially launch the Friend Referral Program in the coming weeks. This will allow creators to provide customized rewards to players who invite their friends to their experiences. Roblox expects that platform retention time will also increase as both users and invited friends can receive rewards when this feature is activated.

Roblox also supports creators in promoting growth and reaching more players through various methods such as Sponsored Experiences and Search Ads through the Ads Manager. In the coming weeks, Roblox announced plans to make significant product upgrades that have been requested for a long time, such as highly responsive ad units, improved performance, simplified settings, and ROI-based reporting functions.

Expanding Creators' Revenue Generation Methods

According to Roblox, a total of $923 million was paid to developers through the Developer Exchange Program (DevEx) in 2024. The top 10 developers on the platform earned an average of $33.9 million in 2024, a 450% increase from 2019, and the top 100 developers earned an average of $6 million, a 500% increase. For the top 1,000 developers, revenue increased by 570% from 2019 to 2024, recording an average of $820,000.

Roblox plans to announce ways for creators to generate more revenue during this GDC 2025 period. As part of this, rewarded video ads are operated in beta version within some experiences, and will be expanded to more creators in the second quarter of this year. A Roblox official said, "This will not only allow creators to provide more value to users at key points in the game, but also create highly efficient advertisements for brands," and added, "This method is expected to support creators in generating higher revenue and lead to higher engagement in the experience itself."

Along with this, Roblox plans to allow creators to directly sell in-game currency, boosts, items, and other developer products within the experience details page to expand creators' revenue. This will make it easier for players to discover and use all the content provided in each experience.
