Post

Just jotting down what I know about the Flame Shaper.

Just a random dragon passing by. I'm not very good either.

Since I see a lot of questions about Devastation,I wrote down what I know, focusing on things that aren't on Wowhead or might be confusing.

For detailed information, please refer to the true Wowhead.

Let me know if there's anything wrong. I'll fix it.

Things to know about Flame Shaper

1. Regarding Scorch

Scorch is a single target skill. It has a 50% damage increase for each DoT on the target.

Devastation can apply 3 types of DoTs.

If the cycle is running normally, they should all be applied without you having to pay special attention.

(1) Breath of Eons

(2) Living Flame DoT (Hero Talent - Ignite)

(3) Ruby Embers (Devastation Talent)

And additionally affecting it are

(1) Smoldering Embers Talent (Red spells enhanced based on Breath stage)

(2) Iridescent Scales Talent (Next 2 red spells enhanced after using Breath)

The 3 DoTs are always used if you're using the Flame Shaper tree,

but the 2 additional talents below are sometimes taken and sometimes not. You need to keep this in mind.

2. Regarding Flame Absorption

I see Scorch doing AoE damage?

That's not Scorch, but the damage from the Flame Absorption additional talent attached to Scorch.

When you use Scorch, if Breath of Eons is applied, it consumes 2 seconds of the DoT to deal AoE damage to nearby enemies (damage equivalent to 2 seconds of DoT x900%)

Confusing part:

The 50% damage increase per DoT of Scorch applies to single target damage, so it's not related to the damage from Flame Absorption.

However, the Smoldering Embers (red spell damage increase on enemies affected by Breath) effect will also apply to Flame Absorption, so if you have this talent, fully charging Breath will deal more damage to nearby enemies.

If you don't have the Smoldering Embers talent, the damage per second of DoT is the same whether you use Breath at stage 1 or stage 4, so the Breath charging stage and Flame Absorption damage are not related.

Basic Damage Cycle

Devastation damage skills are divided into 4 types.

1. Empowered Skills

- Breath of Eons

- Eternity Surge

2. Essence Spending Skills

- Disintegrate (Single)

- Pyre (AoE)

3. Fillers

- Living Flame

- Azure Strike

4. Other

- Shattering Star

Empowered Skills > Essence Spending Skills > Fillers are stronger = Use them in this priority.

Use Empowered Skills on cooldown -> Use Essence Skills if you have Essence -> Use Fillers if you don't

Shattering Star is a damage increase, so you apply it and then use strong skills, right?

There are more things to챙길게 if you go into detail, but keep this framework in mind and then챙길게 the details.

Opener

Single Target

1. Pre-cast Living Flame before pulling (to apply a DoT for the Scorch that will follow)

2. Dragonrage (Set bonus activated, 1 stack of Hoard)

3. Shattering Star (2 stacks of Hoard)

4. Overawe + Breath of Eons

5. Scorch x2.

6. Eternity Surge

7. Essence Spending Skills (Pyre, Disintegrate)

If you took Wildfire, AoE

1. Living Flame on the high HP add while gathering mobs

2. Deep Breath

3. Firestorm

4. Dragonrage (Set bonus activated, 1 stack of Hoard)

5. Shattering Star (2 stacks of Hoard)

6. Overawe + Breath of Eons

7. Scorch x2.

8. Eternity Surge

9. Essence Spending Skills (Pyre, Disintegrate)

That's all. After that, just cycle according to the priority explained above.

However, after looking at a few top logs, some people don't use Shattering Star before Breath, but after Eternity Surge.

How to Use Scorch

Single Target:

1. With all 3 DoTs applied

2. Use with Shattering Star debuff up.

Additionally,

If you took Iridescent Scales, also apply Iridescent Scales.

If you took Smoldering EmbersStage 2Use Breath. Use Scorch with Shattering Star

If you took both, BreathStage 4and use Scorch. Shattering Star is good to have, but skip if not possible

* This is also announced in the Evoker Discord, but it seems a bit different from the logs.

AoE:

1. Use on enemies with 2 seconds or more of Breath of Eons remaining.

2. It's good to have the other DoTs and Shattering Star applied, but it's okay if not (since it's just single target damage, it might be better to just use AoE once more)

** It might be meaningful to apply DoTs to high HP mobs in Mythic+ and use Scorch to burst them down.

2. Raid

I was going to upload the raid talents, but there are too many versions, so I recommend checking the logs yourself.

As we move into this week, Flame Shaper is showing strength in most raid encounters on Heroic difficulty.

The talent build is also shifting away from Firestorm and towards Mana Font + Smoldering Embers.

The talents that are present or absent vary, but are mainly the following 5:

Check each talent carefully and play accordingly!

Iridescent Scales - If you use an Empowered spell, the next2 casts of the same color spell are enhanced for 10 seconds

Wildfire - Damage increase to enemies inside Firestorm

Imminent Destruction - Essence cost reduction when using Deep Breath

Smoldering Embers - Red spell damage increase to enemies affected by Breath

Mana Font - Adds 1 Empower stage, casts faster

FAQ

1. It's different on YouTube and Wowhead.

What you saw on YouTube is probably lizzimcguire's video, who is #1 Devastation in Mythic+.

It's an explanation of how to play in Mythic+ with the Mythic+ talent build.

It's based on a build with Imminent Destruction, Wildfire, Smoldering Embers, Mana Font + Firestorm

The Wowhead rotation guide is based on the raid talent build, so it's not included.

The rotation itself isn't that different, and the raid build doesn't take Imminent Destruction, so there's no need to use Deep Breath.

2. How many charges should I use for Breath?

AoE - Full charge

Single Target - See the How to Use Scorch section.

3. If I took Smoldering Embers, isn't it always better to use the 4-charge Breath for the most damage increase?

In single target situations, Breath is applied, so instant Living Flame procs also occur

There's also the Catalyze talent, which doubles the Breath DoT while using Disintegrate.

There's not much to buff red spell damage in single target situations.

I think you only need to 4-charge in AoE situations.

4. In AoE, isn't it better to reduce the charge and maintain the damage increase for longer?

There's some merit to that, but you also need to consider Devastation's trait where the damage decreases over time due to Giant Slayer.

You also need to consider that the Breath cooldown comes back quickly when there are many targets.

I don't have the dedication to calculate it mathematically... The #1 Mythic+ ranking player full charges, so let's do that too....

5. Why do I have to switch targets when using Scorch in AoE?
To maximize Flame Absorption when using Scorch, you need 2 seconds of Breath remaining, but after shooting at one target, 2 seconds disappear, so it's not enough to shoot at the same target again. That's why you switch targets.

6. Why apply the tier set bonus to Breath?

Simple. Breath deals more damage than Eternity Surge.

7. How to see the Empower stage in logs

Enter the following in the filter expression window in the upper right corner of the log graph section

type = "empowerend"

Select summary -> event to check
