Dragon Quest 4: The Reckless Princess Alena, Uncovering Everything About Her
1. 👑 Alena, the Wild Princess: Who is She?
· Alena is one of the 'Chosen Ones' who appears in Dragon Quest IV, the main character of Chapter 2, 'The Wild Princess's Adventure,' and one of the most popular characters in the Dragon Quest series.
· There's a rumor that Alena was modeled after 'Arite,' the protagonist of the children's novel 'Princess Arite's Adventure,' released seven years before DQIV. Arite presented a new type of heroine who thought and acted for herself, rather than waiting for a prince's help.
· Alena is the princess of the Zamoksva Kingdom, but 'wild' is an understatement for her free-spirited personality. She does push-ups and sit-ups every night, kicks down the wall of her room that was under repair, and embarks on adventures, never hesitating to take reckless actions.
· Her appearance, with a unique triangular hat, mini-skirt, dress, and black tights, makes her look more like a mage than a warrior at first glance. At the time, most princesses in the DQ series either didn't participate in combat or were magic-using support types, making Alena a new kind of princess who defeated enemies with her fists.
· She rarely listens to the advice of her father, the King, or her majordomo, Borya, and thanks to her bright and positive personality, she even enjoys fighting monsters. She is considered one of the top 'brawn-over-brains' characters among all Dragon Quest characters.
· According to the gamebook version, she learned martial arts as self-defense at the King's behest but became too strong. In the remake's party chat, she often makes combat-related remarks, and during the fake princess event, she says she 'wanted to beat up the kidnappers,' showing a tendency to solve everything with force.
· Winning the martial arts tournament was a given, and she often makes remarks overestimating her own skill, such as claiming the other contestants were weak. She even dismisses Psaro, the final boss, as a 'coward who ran away, scared of her strength.'
· However, she's not just wild. She also possesses the kindness and sense of justice befitting royalty, as seen when she offers to help the fake princess who impersonated her.
· While there's little mention of her appearance, she shows a girlish side when, upon hearing she has 'small breasts' at a hot spring, she confidently retorts, 'It doesn't matter; if they're too big, they get in the way during a fight.'
· She has little interest in romance and doesn't notice the feelings of Kiryl, who is fond of her. However, in the novel version, she doesn't dislike Kiryl and sometimes shows jealousy when Maya or Meena approach him.

2. ⚔️ Alena's Combat Performance: Original vs. Remake Comparison
· Alena is a pure physical attacker who learns no spells, with high Strength and Agility growth, allowing her to deal significant damage with preemptive strikes.
· In the early stages of Chapter 2, she can struggle with bare-handed combat, but equipping weapons like clubs stabilizes battles. Equipping multi-target weapons like whips or boomerangs greatly increases her efficiency in clearing minor enemies.
· From Chapter 5 onwards, her focus shifts to claw-type weapons befitting a Martial Artist, and the variety of equipable weapons is not extensive.
· In the early stages of Chapter 5, due to low stats and limited equipment, she often ends up waiting in the wagon. However, once she surpasses Level 15, her Strength and Agility grow significantly, and she emerges as a core character.
· Alena's most significant feature is her exceptionally high Critical Hit rate.
VersionCritical Hit RateNotes
Other Characters1/6
FC/PS AlenaLevel × 1/256
(Fixed at 1/4 at Level 64+)
DS AlenaLevel × 1/256 × 3/4
(Max approx. 1/4 at Level 89)
Over 10% at around Level 40
At lower levels, guaranteed 1/6 like other characters
DQ3 Martial ArtistLevel × 1/256Higher critical rate than Alena at high levels

· The 'Critical Fork' is a weapon that allows two attacks, and both attacks have a critical hit check, which synergizes extremely well with Alena's high critical hit rate. With a 1/4 critical hit rate, there's a 43% chance of activating a critical hit once per turn. This is highly efficient for Metal Slime hunting and significantly lowers the game's difficulty.
· Due to the overwhelming synergy with the Critical Fork, Alena's former strongest weapon, the 'Flame Claw,' has faded in prominence. Alena's existence might be why no character with a similar high critical rate and multi-attack ability appeared in Dragon Quest V.
· While her offensive power is excellent, her defensive capabilities are unstable. She cannot equip armor and is limited to clothing, and she can barely equip shields, creating a significant difference from other characters. (Excluding the Mi-Flower Parasol, exclusive to the smartphone version)
· In the FC version, there was no damage reduction equipment, and the 'Dress of Radiance,' her highest defense, was a difficult-to-use armor that had a chance to activate Bounce. Although her HP itself is set high, she takes damage surprisingly easily because she cannot reduce spell or breath attacks.
· The most dangerous situation is when she is 'confused.' With her high attack power, she can deal massive damage to allies, so it's best to prioritize equipping the 'Silver Headband' or the smartphone version's 'Golden Tiara,' which provide confusion resistance.
· In remake versions after the PS version, her stats were slightly weakened, but her utility greatly improved with the introduction of the 'Tactics' system. She could perform strategic actions beyond just attacking, such as using the 'Sage's Stone' or 'Staff of Salvation' for healing, 'Ice Blade' or 'Staff of Judgment' for area attacks, and 'Sands of Time.' Her high Agility also made her useful for item usage.
· In terms of equipment, the 'Gringham Whip' appeared, allowing her to deal significant damage to all enemies. Her originally high HP was significantly reduced, but she could now equip the 'Angel Leotard' and 'Magical Skirt,' which have confusion resistance, providing some durability.
· In the remake version, she transformed from a pure attacker in the original to a versatile character capable of using items with her high Agility, resulting in a balanced adjustment.

3. 🌟 Alena's Activities in Spin-off Titles
· Due to her high popularity, Alena appears in many spin-off titles.
· She also appeared in the 2016 Dragon Quest 30th Anniversary Live Spectacle Tour, where Shoko Nakagawa played Alena, garnering much attention.
· Shoko Nakagawa also voiced Alena in the Dragon Quest Heroes series and Rivals.
· The 1995 Super Famicom game 'Lady Stalker' was originally planned as a spin-off depicting Alena's party's adventures. The main character settings are very similar to Alena, Kiryl, and Borya, and many of the monsters that appear are similar to those in Dragon Quest.
