Emerald tier added to LoL, 'Promotion matches removed'

Riot Games is planning big changes for League of Legends with Split 2, the second season of the year. Following the already implemented simplified promotion series, they are removing promotion series altogether and adding a new Emerald tier between Platinum and Diamond.

Riot Games announced upcoming changes to ranked games through a new developer diary on their official website, previewing the changes to come.

First, the overall rank distribution will change, and the Emerald tier will be introduced. Riot explained that other games have a similar distribution of players in ranks corresponding to Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. However, in League of Legends, over 60% are in Silver and Bronze, skewed towards the lower ranks.

They also mentioned that current Silver players have above-average skills, and Gold players have significantly above-average vision, and plan to even out the user distribution around Gold 2 for improvement.

However, they do not plan to change the current rank distribution above Diamond. To reduce inflation in Diamond, they are adding the Emerald tier, which will accommodate a similar level of players as the Platinum ratio. Riot previously introduced the Emerald tier in the mobile game League of Legends: Wild Rift to address similar issues.

The image with the Emerald tier shows that there are no changes in Iron and the highest tier, but users are distributed more evenly from Bronze to the newly added Emerald tier.

Meanwhile, promotion series and placement matches will also change with the split system. Rank resets between splits will be a 'partial reset,' which is less intense than the previous reset method. Accordingly, placement games will be reduced from 10 to half, 5, so you can quickly reach the rank you achieved during Split 1 and start climbing the ranks earlier. Riot stated that the change was due to the mid-season reset, but they plan to maintain 5 placement games in the next season as well.

The promotion series system will also be abolished. While promotion series add tension to the game, there were also many situations where rank advancement was delayed due to repeated failures. In particular, Riot judged that the pressure of repeatedly playing promotion series would be greater as tier advancement becomes more frequent with the addition of a new tier and two splits per season. Therefore, from Split 2, you will be able to move directly to the higher tier once you have accumulated enough LP.

Riot also released a developer update video along with the developer diary, revealing the Clash and future update schedules.

Clash rewards will be based on how many times you have won and lost in the future, and the cycle will change from 2 weeks to 1 month. A Clash held in ARAM (All Random All Mid) will begin in August.

The champions introduced as targets for Art and Sustainability Updates are Lee Sin and Teemo. They are scheduled to be updated in the first and second half of 2024, respectively. For both the lean and muscular Lee Sin and the stocky Yordle Teemo, more attention will be paid to their respective body proportions while implementing more modern animations. The plan is to improve Lee Sin's body movements, which are far from actual martial arts, to enhance the feeling of a monk warrior while maintaining his unique feel. Teemo doesn't have any bad parts in his appearance itself, but his range of motion will be increased by lengthening his arms and legs, and details and expressions will be emphasized.
