Minecraft Finally Releases PS5 Version 4 Years After Console's Release

Developing games from scratch takes a lot of time, and so does releasing an alternative version based on Minecraft’s timeline. Since PS5’s 2020 release, many games have released new editions for the console, while Minecraft has held back, causing players to use the PS4 version until this week.

In an update released recently, Minecraft released a native PS5 version that aims to use all the advantages of Sony’s current-gen console. Prior to this, players would run the PS4 version even on PS5. This new version is available as a free upgrade, which players can claim via Minecraft’s dedicated page, the PlayStation Store.

The upgrade is also complemented with a couple of new features as PS5 players finally get access to 4K visuals and 60fps gameplay. Such features were already present on Xbox and PC. A Hardcore mode where players have only one life, and the bundling mechanic for different items are the new additions to the game.

The Hardcore mode will surely attract the attention of adventure seekers of Minecraft, and if nothing goes according to the plan, you can always visit your world as a ghost later on. The bundling mechanic should come in handy when saving space in inventories.

It may have taken longer than it should for Minecraft to release a PS5 version, it isn't quite a surprise since Microsoft owns Mojang. However, the demand from PlayStation gamers was too significant to overlook forever. PS5 has been consistently outselling Xbox Series X&S, and there’s a strong chance that a substantial portion of Minecraft’s player base is on Sony’s console.

The timing of this PS5 version release for Minecraft could also be strategic since PS5 Pro is also around the corner. Minecraft could introduce further visual upgrades or new content tailored to leverage the next-gen capabilities following the PS5 Pro’s release, which boasts more advanced hardware.

Minecraft’s PS5 release also follows a trend of other Microsoft-affiliated titles making their way to PlayStation. Earlier in the year, Sea of Thieves, Grounded, and more became available on PlayStation. While Microsoft has been focusing on releasing quality exclusives for its respective platforms, it looks like the tech giant may need to tap into new demand after all. Releasing titles on its rival platform would still allow Microsoft to positively drive revenue. Regardless of the reason behind these moves, the increased availability of games benefits all gamers and broadens player pools for cross-platform titles.
