Minecraft's creator Markus "Notch" Persson started 2025 with a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) that injected fans with a major dose of hope for the Minecraft sequel. Notch revealed his plans to work on a new project, describing it as "basically Minecraft 2."
Notch started the conversation with a poll. Followers got to choose between his current project, a traditional roguelike dungeon crawler, and a game resembling Minecraft. While it's hard to guess what Notch was expecting from this poll, the Minecraft option received overwhelming support. In the end, 78 percent of the voters wanted to see a successor to Minecraft.
With the poll closing, Notch also commented on the result and acknowledged that demand from fans could convince him to switch his focus. "Maybe people actually do want me to make another game that's super similar to the first one," he wrote. "And I mean, sure, I'd take that cash."
Notch still clarified that any such project would be a new and original game rather than an official Minecraft sequel. This is because Microsoft owns the Minecraft IP following a $2.5 billion acquisition in 2014. This new potential game would have to find a different identity out of respect for Mojang and Microsoft.
"There was a one-year period where I couldn't make a game with modifiable terrain... but that's long past," Notch noted. "Still, using the Minecraft name would be super illegal." Instead, he envisions the project as a "spiritual successor" that captures the essence of Minecraft while remaining distinct.
Considering Notch's love for Stardew Valley, many fans have been speculating whether he could combine the best characteristics of the farming simulation game and Minecraft. Regardless of Notch's direction, he's likely to see great day-one numbers based on Minecraft's legacy. However, retaining players would be an entirely different beast, especially in today's saturated gaming market.
Direct and indirect competition have risen significantly since Minecraft's 2009 release. This would also challenge Notch to see whether he has kept up with the times and trends within the gaming world. Many industry experts were proven wrong with their product ideas in recent years and the overall environment within the gaming scene is more cutthroat than ever. If Notch could overcome all potential challenges and release yet another banger, that would take his legacy to another level and potentially overshadow his controversial public persona.
