Sony Launches PS5 Rental Service in the UK

Sony has officially launched a PS5 rental program in the UK. This system allows gamers to lease a PS5 instead of purchasing one for the full price. There are multiple plans available, with the lowest monthly prices set at £10.99 for 36 months long contracts.

The rental service goes by the name of Flex, and it’s filled with various options for different budgets. You can rent a PS5 Digital Edition for £10.99 per month on a 36-month plan or opt for a PS5 Pro at £18.95 per month under the same term. The disc drive version of the PS5 is also available for £11.99 per month on a long-term lease. Shorter-term plans, including 12, 24, and rolling monthly options, are available but come at a higher monthly cost.

Gamers looking to dive deeper into the PlayStation ecosystem can also rent premium accessories like a DualSense Edge controller, PlayStation VR2, and even the PlayStation Portal remote player. In the UK, Raylo, a tech leasing company, handles the finer details of the operation. The service also comes with a fair wear-and-tear policy, so significant damages could result in repair fees.

Sony previously launched a similar initiative in Japan, where gaming retailer GEO introduced short-term PS5 rentals. This program allowed users to rent PS5s for eight-to-15 days, and it was a massive success.

Short-term PS5 rentals are particularly appealing for gamers who only need a console for specific occasions. Some players might want a PS5 solely for hosting LAN parties or weekend gaming sessions with friends. There can also be players looking to blitz through a handful of titles during a limited timeframe. Someone on holiday or taking time off work may want to complete major PlayStation exclusives like God of War: Ragnarok or Spider-Man 2 without the long-term commitment of ownership.

Long-term rentals can be ideal for gamers interested in keeping up with the latest generation of hardware. Instead of purchasing a PS5 and later dealing with depreciation and resale efforts, players can simply rent the newest version when their lease term ends. Being able to rent accessories like PS VR2 and the DualSense Edge controller could also boost sales numbers since their high prices can scare away potential buyers. Being able to test these accessories before buying them could be a deal breaker for gamers unsure of the financial commitment.
